PRP for Hair

Hair loss in the United States is experienced by millions of adults, many of whom would prefer to maintain a full head of natural hair. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) for hair at Integrated Spine & Pain Care in Farmington, New York, may be able to revive your follicles so they can grow healthy hair again, and Hasib Mikael Sarij, MD, can determine whether you’re a candidate for the treatment. PRP for Hair Q & A

What is PRP for hair?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a liquid substance containing growth factors, platelets, and plasma from your blood. Among its many uses is promoting hair growth. There are other treatments that use it too, like PRP for skin or for joint pain management.

During a PRP treatment to promote natural hair growth at Integrated Spine & Pain Care, Dr. Sarij collects a sample of your blood and places it in a centrifuge. The spinning motion of the device causes the blood sample to separate into distinct layers, one of which contains platelets with no red or white blood cells. This is the PRP you’ll use in your treatment.

Once the PRP is ready, Dr. Sarij carefully injects it into the balding or thinning areas of your scalp. This increases blood supply to your follicles, helps heal cellular damage, and may thicken the individual hair shafts in the area.

Why might I consider PRP for hair?

PRP for hair often works as a treatment for various types of hair loss, including genetic hair loss like male- or female-pattern baldness. There are plenty of reasons why your hair might be getting thinner or why your bald spot may be growing, including:

  • Traction from tight hairstyles
  • Harsh chemical treatments or hair products
  • Stress
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease)
  • Cancer treatments

Some types of hair loss respond to PRP treatments while others don’t. It’s important to come in for a consultation with Dr. Sarij at Integrated Spine & Pain Care to discuss your overall health and the underlying causes of your hair loss. Dr. Sarij can tell you if you’re a candidate for the treatment.

How long does it take to see results from using PRP for hair?

The results of PRP for hair vary from person to person. Depending on the amount of hair loss you have, you might need to undergo several PRP treatments to get some regrowth.

People who get positive results from PRP for hair tend to see the growth of some of their hair return within three to six months of their initial treatment. Dr. Sarij later follows up with you to measure your results, and you get maintenance treatments every four to six months thereafter.
