TMJ

  • What is TMJ?
    • TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The temporomandibular joint is a sliding hinge which connects the jawbone to the skull. The TMJs assist in movements such as chewing and speaking. TMJ dysfunction occurs when the muscles and ligaments surrounding the jaw joints become irritated or inflamed. This is a disorder that could be acute or chronic. Symptoms of this condition include jaw discomfort or soreness, headaches, earaches or ringing in the ears, pain, clicking or popping of the jaw, locking of the jaw, clenching or grinding of the teeth, dizziness, teeth sensitivity, numbness or tingling in the fingers and more.
  • What causes TMJ?
    • It is often difficult to determine the exact cause of an individual’s TMJ dysfunction. One of the main causes of this condition is too much strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles. Other causes of TMJ dysfunction could be genetics, bruxism, arthritis, or jaw injury. Additionally, injury to the jaw, head, or the neck may also cause TMJ dysfunction.
  • How can we treat TMJ?
