When women reach middle age, their reproductive hormones naturally decline, triggering menopause. If you develop unpleasant side effects of menopause, like hot flashes and vaginal dryness, visit Mikael Sarij, MD, at Evolve Medical in Farmingdale on New York’s Long Island. He offers effective treatments such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections to reduce the effects of menopause. What is menopause?

Menopause is the natural decline in a woman’s reproductive hormones that signals the end of their ability to bear children. Menopause is officially diagnosed after a woman goes 12 months without having a menstrual period. This typically happens sometime in a woman’s 40s or 50s.

The three stages of menopause include perimenopause (the time leading up to menopause when the decline in hormone levels starts taking effect), menopause, and postmenopause.

What are some symptoms of menopause?

Menopause can cause symptoms such as:

  • Vaginal dryness
  • Chills
  • Hot flashes
  • Mood changes
  • Sleep problems
  • Night sweats
  • Loss of breast fullness,
  • Thinning hair
  • Dry skin
  • Weight gain
  • Slower metabolism

Menopause can also affect your bone density. This increases your risk of developing osteoporosis, a condition where the bones become so weak they break easily.

Some women have few symptoms of menopause, while others experience years of distressing problems. At Evolve Medical, your provider offers treatments that may help with some of these menopausal symptoms.

How do you treat menopause?

The primary treatments Evolve Medical uses to treat menopause are hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and the O-shot.

HRT is medication that contains female hormones — either estrogen, progesterone, or both. You take HRT to replace the hormones your body stops making during menopause. Hormone therapy is often used to treat common menopausal symptoms, including vaginal discomfort and hot flashes.

HRT comes in various forms, including pills, patches, injections, and long-acting implants. Your provider can help you choose the best method for your needs.

The O-shot is an injection containing platelet-rich plasma (PRP). PRP comes from your blood. It’s a mixture of the liquid part of your blood (plasma) and platelets, which contain healing growth factors. PRP has numerous uses in medicine and aesthetics because it promotes tissue repair and new, healthy cell production.

Injecting PRP into the vulva and vagina could help to increase lubrication, vaginal sensation, sexual desire, arousal, and orgasm quality.*

To obtain PRP, your Evolve Medical provider extracts some blood and spins it in a centrifuge. This device separates the plasma and platelets from the other components. It’s then ready to inject into your body.

It’s also important to look at aspects of your lifestyle that could affect your health. A nutritious diet, plenty of exercise, reducing stress, and quitting bad habits like smoking can significantly improve your well-being and the intensity of your menopause symptoms.
