Melasma

Melasma

  • What is melasma?
    • Melasma, otherwise known as sunspots, is a common skin condition that is characterized by brown or freckle-like spots on the skin. These patches often appear as flat patches and are commonly found on many areas of the body such as the cheeks, forehead, and arms. Although, melasma may affect any area of the skin that is exposed to sunlight which is why many people notice their symptoms worsen during the summer months.
  • How does melasma occur?
    • The skin is made of three layers, the top of which is called the epidermis. The epidermis contains melanocyte cells that store and produce dark color pigments known as melanin. When the skin is exposed to light, heat, UV radiation, or hormonal changes, the melanocytes release more melanin and darken the appearance of our skin.
  • Is melasma painful?
    • While melasma may be considered chronic, meaning it is long-lasting, it is a harmless skin condition. Melasma is not considered painful, uncomfortable, or itchy. If these symptoms occur, please reach out to a medical professional.
