What is TMJ?
TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The temporomandibular joint is a sliding hinge which connects the jawbone to the skull, assisting with movements such as chewing and speaking.
TMJ dysfunction occurs when the muscles and ligaments surrounding the jaw joints become irritated or inflamed, causing symptoms such as:
- Discomfort
- Headaches
- Earaches
- Ringing Ears
- Pain, Clicking or Popping of the Jaw
- Locking of the Jaw
- Teeth Clenching or Grinding
- Dizziness
- Teeth Sensitivity
- Numbness or Tingling in the Fingers
It is often difficult to determine the exact cause of an individual’s temporomandibular joint dysfunction. One of the main causes of this condition is too much strain on the jaw joints and surrounding muscles–although other causes include genetics, arthritis, bruxism, or injury.
